It’s here fight fans, the one we have all been waiting for, Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Justin Gaethje – the Lightweight Championship is on the line along with Khabib’s unbeaten record which currently stands at 28. We last saw The Eagle at UFC 242 just over a year ago, beating Dustin Poirier via submission, this time his test looks a little tougher against the man from Arizona who beat Tony Ferguson to earn his shot at glory. Abu Dhabi plays host to the most eagerly anticipated bout of the year and Fight Island will end with this blockbuster of a showdown – Khabib, the undefeated Dagestan, who has taken apart every opponent Dana White has been able to throw at him, most notably, Conor McGregor on that famous night in 2018. Probably the greatest 155-pounder to grace the Octagon, he will no doubt look to take the fight to the mat where his devastating combinations come into play.
The rise of Justin Gaethje has been much more of a slow burner, moving to the company in 2017 he began with two defeats to Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier, he’s now on a four-fight winning streak where he stepped in at the last minute as an opponent for Tony Ferguson, after Khabib, coincidentally, had to pull out. His style is one the Eagle won’t have faced as such – a non-stop, in your face style – Justin will want to keep Khabib in boxing range and maintain his fast tempo throughout.
The fight looks likely to hinge on if Khabib can get Justin to the mat, and how fast he can do this. The longer they both stay upright the better chance Justin will have at winning, however, keeping the fight away from mat, as a certain Mr McGregor found out, is easier said than done. Elsewhere on a stacked card, Robert Whittaker will take on Jared Cannonier in the co-main event, where the winner will be looking for a shot at middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya. Whittaker comes into this fight after his win over Darren Till and the number one contender for Israel’s crown.
Cannonier is an interesting one, after dropping down from light-heavyweight he looks a reformed character. His last three fights have seen him TKO David Branch, Jack Hermansson and Anderson Silva. The move to middleweight looks perfect for the Killa Gorilla and Whittaker will need to be on his A-game if he is to secure that coveted title shot.
Other fights on the card include Alexander Volkov vs Walt Harris where both fighters will want to get back to winning ways and Magomed Ankalaev fights Ion Cuțelaba in a bout which has been cancelled a number of times already.
