Next manager oddsBy Mark Rawlinson

This weekend has seen a whole host of manager sackings and there’s a number of job going at clubs such as Wigan Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley.

Next Wigan Manager

Wigan parted company with Owen Coyle yesterday after less than six months in charge at the DW Stadium, with the Latics languishing in 14th in the Championship table.

You could argue that Coyle is the victim of his predecessor’s success, with Wigan’s league form being distracted by their participation in the Europa League, which in the past has been a hindrance to Premier league sides, let alone Championship ones.

Chairman Dave Whelan is now on the search for a replacement and ex-Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan is the early favourite to make his first step into solo management at Wigan. Paddy Power provide the best odds of 5/6 on Phelan being appointed at the FA Cup winners.

The other forerunner in the bookies’ lists is Ian Holloway with the former Crystal Palace manager linked to a return to Lancashire where he famously led Blackpool to the Premier League. He’s backed by Stan James at 5/2.

Next Sheffield Wednesday Manager

After a run of three straight defeats Dave Jones was given the boot by Sheffield Wednesday chairman Milan Mandarić on Saturday with the Owls mired in the bottom three in the Championship.

Former Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock once joked that if he took over as manager at Hillsborough he would get them relegated.

However Warnock has been without a job after being sacked by Leeds United last season and Bet Victor are pricing him at 5/4 to become the new Wednesday manager.

Steve Evans, manager of the nearby Rotherham United, is also being touted as a possible replacement as he guided The Millers back into League One last season. Stan James offer the best odds on him taking coming in at 3/1.

Former England under-21s manager Stuart Pearce has also been linked to the job and SkyBet offer the best odds on him being the new Wednesday manager at 7/1.

Next Barnsley Manager

David Flitcroft was also axed at the weekend with his Barnsley side rooted to the foot of the Championship table.

Former Sheffield Wednesday is the current favourite to make a return to the club he started his managerial career with back in 1994. Bet Victor provide the best odds of 2/1 on him coming back to Oakwell.

Flitcroft’s assistant Micky Mellon is currently the caretaker manager at Barnsley and is another fore runner to be given the job full time, with Paddy Power providing the best odds of 2/1.

Michael Appleton, who last managed at Blackburn Rovers in March, is priced at 6/1 with Bet Victor to take over at the club.

Next Portsmouth Manager

Portsmouth are still on the search for a new boss after the sacking of Guy Whittingham on November 25th.

Newport County had turned down a request from the club to speak to their manager Justin Edinburgh but Oxford United have given the south coast club permission to talk to Chris Wilder.

He’s 7/4 favourite with Bet Victor to be their new manager former Crawley Town manager Richard Barker also priced at 7/4 with the same website. Longstanding Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale is priced at 6/1 with Coral for the job.
