Thursday sees the start of one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, as the Players Championship gets underway at TPC Sawgrass.
It may not be one of the four majors, but it’s the biggest tournament on the PGA Tour and is a title all elite golfers would be delighted to have on their career résumé.
The stadium course is always packed to the rafters and is most famous for the 17th hole, with the island green jutting out into the lake.
Players Championship Outrights
Defending champion Tiger Woods once again misses out after failing to return from full fitness after surgery on his back.
This means Rory McIlroy heads into the tournament as favourite with the bookies. The Ulsterman started last tournament well with a round of 66, but fell away with second and third rounds of 72 and 73, eventually recovering to finish tied for eighth. His best performance this season was a play-off loss to Russell Henley at the Honda Classic back in March. Bet 365 price him at 14/1 to take the title.
Adam Scott enjoyed a successful 2013 season, notably winning the Masters and The Barclays and the Australian is close to taking the number one spot in the rankings from Woods. He won here at Sawgrass in 2004 and is available at 18/1 with Bet Victor to win the tournament again.
Matt Kuchar is another previous winner of the Players Championship, after scooping the title back in 2012. The 35-year-old has won one title so far this season, the RBC Heritage in South Carolina and performed well at the Masters, tying for fifth. He’s currently priced at 18/1 with Bet Victor.
Sergio Garcia lifted the Players Championship trophy in 2008, following a play-off win over the experienced Paul Goydos. The Spaniard only success this season was the Qatar Masters on the European Tour back in January. A number of outlets, including Sportingbet, price him at 22/1.
World number 10 Justin Rose won his first Major last year, the US Open, but is yet to taste success so far this season. He’s available at 25/1 with Paddy Power.
Henrik Stenson won this title in 2009, finishing four shots ahead of England’s Ian Poulter. The Swede, who is ranked at number three, is also best priced at 25/1 with Ladbrokes.
2007 champion Phil Mickleson overcame South African Rory Sabbatini to win the title that year. Coral price him at 28/1.
Bubba Watson lifted his second Masters title in April and is at 35/1 by Bet 365. Elsewhere Lee Westwood, who clinched the Malaysian Open a few weeks ago, is available at 35/1 with Sportingbet whilst Coral price Zach Johnson at 33/1.
