Estimate and Ryan Moore were faultless in their courageous bid to Gold Cup glory on Thursday and Just The Judge and Jamie Spencer will be hoping for a similar performance as they take on 16 opponents in Friday’s feature race, the Coronation Stakes.
Charles Hills’ filly was unlucky in the English 1,000 Guineas two runs ago when beaten by half a length, close home by today’s strong opponent Sky Lantern. She then improved for the Irish version last time out when winning in superb fashion, making her the 3/1 leading contender for Friday’s big race.
Sky Lantern proved what a fantastic horse she is at Newmarket though and Richard Hannon’s 3-year-old is currently second favourite at 5/1 with BetVictor.
It will not be straightforward for them though as they are drawn very wide in stall’s 16 and 17, which will make it very difficult for the pair, so both jockeys will have their work cut out if they are to compete again here.
Big Break and Pavlosk both come into this with good form and could cause an upset, whilst Siyenica and Viztoria are another two who should be taken seriously. Saeed bin Suroor’s Lovely Pass did well in UAE last time, however this demands a lot more but she could be worth a small bet.
The King Edward VII Stakes looks a non-contest on paper, with Battle Of Marengo miles in front in the betting. A P O’Brien’s colt won four in a row before the Derby earlier this month, but his fourth there sets the standard here and he will be extremely hard to beat.
Coral and Bet365 are offering the best price of 5/6 for the favourite, whilst second favourite Mutashaded is 8/1 with Ladbrokes. He is unbeaten in two runs so far and looks to be improving, although a huge step up in class is needed to win this. Among others that are in with a chance at decent value, are the Dante disappointment, Greatwood, Hillstar and Contributer.
The first race of the day is the Albany Stakes which looks to be an extremely competitive renewal of the race that William Buick won aboard Newfangled. He rides 25/1 (William Hill) shot Princess Noor this time, so things are sure to be more difficult, although a small bet could be worth it.
Jockey Frankie Dettori will hope for his first win of the meeting here, when he saddles the impressive Sandiva in search of her third win. She won well last time in a listed contest at Naas, giving her the advantage here as she leads the betting at 11/4 with Paddy Power and others.
Many others warrant respect in this wide open betting contest, including half-sister to wonder-horse Frankel, Joyeuse, A P O’Brien’s Wonderfully and 310,000gns purchase, Wedding Ring. The previous won well on her debut at HQ and looks interesting, as do Midnite Angel and Race Hunter at slightly longer odds.
It will make for a perfect race should Lady Cecil’s Disclaimer win the Queen’s Vase in Memory of Sir Henry Cecil at 17.00. The late, great trainer who sadly passed away recently, trained the 3-year-old to all of his recent wins, however this should be his toughest contest yet.
Leading Light has won 2 from 2 at 1m2f and this step up in trip should suit, making him the short 2-1 favourite with Coral. Mister Impatience has enjoyed longer trips up to now and may well suit the distance, whilst his yard have a good record in this.
Royal Skies is another who should run well and Sir Michael Stoute’s Baihas represents good value for a horse that should stay.
The Wolferton Handicap and the Buckingham Palace Stakes should both provide some fantastic and tricky horse racing for punters. Jockey William Buick will be hoping for a similar to race to last year in the 4.25, when he saddles Dick Doughtywylie. Another who represents extremely good value is Marco Botti’s Fattsota, who is a bit of an Ascot specialist.
Finally, the best value in the Buckingham Palace Stakes may well be with champion jockey Richard Hughes who saddles Democretes. He has not won since 2011, but steps back up to 7f which could be positive. Highland Colori and Baccarat are another two appealing outsiders.
